Web Site Maintainence
Maintaining your website is the downfall of many good sites. You've put all of that work into it, keep it up!
Before you even put your site online, make sure EVERYTHING works. If you haven't finished a section then put a "coming soon" note on the site if you think it is going to take 6 months to get around to finish it don't even mention it. Here are some tips for maintaining your website:
- Test your pages:
- Do they fit on all screens?
- Is the site appealing to the eye ?
- What is your loading time?
- Do your graphics look good on low-grade video cards?
- Is your navigation good?
- Does everything work?
- Test your links. Go back regularly to test them. Just because it all worked on Monday doesn't mean it will on Thursday. Broken links and images will hurt your ranking.
- Freshen up the site regularly. Update features, add some new content or change a graphic not to the point it will affect the recognizable look of your site.
- Give an e-mail address where you can be reached.
- Keep an eye on the competition.
- Intergrate new ideas into the site periodically.
- Write down all your own ideas. Don't lose them.
- Test your links.
- Test your codes.
- Test your pages.
- Go back and test your links.
- Check your stats and analyze your results. If something is not working, find out why. If something IS working, you need to know why, stats are the lifeblood of a web site.
- Don't be discouraged put your mindset on the final goal.
- Don't let success blind you.
- Don't try to do something you aren't comfortable with or don't really understand.
- Do work hard. Your site will reflect that.
